“Dinner and a Movie” Offers $5 Theater Tickets


The Downtown Springfield Association announces a new “Dinner and a Movie” collaboration between Hollywood Theaters, The Moxie, and 17 restaurants.

Customers who dine at participating restaurants can purchase movie tickets for $5 each, a savings of more than 37%. (Limit of one ticket per entrée.)

Get Fit, Have Fun with Outdoor Fitness Festival

The third annual Bass Pro Shops® Outdoor World® Outdoor Fitness Festival is growing to be a full menu of activity featuring fitness events, health & wellness, outdoor adventures, and wildlife conservation programs.

America’s most comprehensive outdoor fitness festival includes competitive and fun run/walk events, trail runs, canoe/kayak races, an outdoor skills village with a wide variety of activities and offerings, fitness and health fair, a corporate wellness conference, and youth and kid’s activities. National running celebrities Dick Beardsley, Frank Shorter, and Jeff Galloway will be returning to help us host this great event.

Week one, Oct. 17-18, kicks off with Outdoor Days at Lake Springfield. Competition events include The Great American Canoe and Kayak Races and a GPS Geocaching competition. Other activities include camping, Dutch oven cooking, cave tours, outdoor skills villages with lots of skills classes and instruction of all kinds. New for 2009 is the James River Mountain Man Rendezvous where the life of the 1840s is recreated showing you how man lived, hunted, ate, slept, and survived the elements.

Week two kicks off at 7:30 a.m. October 24 with the 2nd annual St. John’s Tour de Bass Cycling Event. Enjoy a leisurely day touring the beauty of Springfield and the Ozarks with a non-competitive century 100-mile ride, a 70-mile or 35-mile ride or a 9-mile family fun ride.

Also on Oct. 24 youth are at Springfield Underground for their Cross Country Fun Run with the Missouri State University Cross Country team there to encourage and motivate young athletes to follow the sport.

Activities continue Oct. 25 at the beautiful Dogwood Canyon Nature Park with the 2nd annual Dogwood Canyon 50K-25K Trail Runs.

Week three kicks off Oct. 30 with the Corporate Wellness Conference focusing on educating businesses on solutions to the healthcare crisis.

The Fitness & Health Fair will be at Bass Pro Shops® Oct. 30-Nov. 1 focusing on fitness and health with health screenings, informational and interactive booths. Playing a major role in this effort will be St. Johns Health Systems and CoxHealth.

On Oct. 31, the Ozark Greenways Halloween 10K/5K, will raise money to further develop the fantastic greenways trails. Participants in the CoxHealth Wellness Walk can pledge to a healthier lifestyle by joining a fitness pledge walk.

The Bass Pro Shops® Conservation Marathon and the Maynard Cohick Half Marathon, sponsored by Bass Pro Shops and New Balance, are on Nov. 1. They are qualifiers for the Boston Marathon. Plus, there is a great challenge with Marathon Corporate Relay that will lend a little hometown competition among local merchants and businesses and help them raise money for their favorite charity.

Civil War Battlefield Offering Artillery Firing Demonstrations

A temporary exhibit featuring Civil War field artillery equipment is on display in the visitor center at Wilson’s Creek National Battlefield. The display includes two cannons, a caisson and a limber, plus other related artifacts.
 
The exhibit will be displayed through August 7, 2009.

Artillery firing demonstrations also are scheduled on the following dates and will take place on the hour:

July 18:  11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Aug. 18: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sept. 7:  11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

All demonstrations will take place at tour road stop number 5 and are subject to weather and volunteer availability.

There is no charge to view the exhibit; however the standard entrance fee of $5 per adult or $10 per family will apply for persons touring the battlefield.

The battlefield also will have a fee-free weekend Aug. 15-16.

Free Movies at Founders Park

Outdoor movies are a contemporary version of the drive-in theatre at a park on Springfield’s founding site.

Movies begin at dusk on Fridays and Saturdays through Aug. 29.

Cost is free with tickets and family 4-Packs available at the Chesterfield and Doling Family Centers, Mediacom Ice Park, the Busch Municipal Building, and Mediacom Offices. Admission without a free ticket is $5; children 5 years and younger are free.

Greater Ozarks Blues Festival Set for Sept. 11-12

Mark your calendar and plan your trip now to attend the annual Greater Ozarks Blues Festival in Springfield.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 11 and the music begins at 6:30 p.m. Three Friday night performances are scheduled: Nathan Keck & The Underground Blues Division, Kelley Hunt and Tab Benoit.

The fun continues at noon Sept. 12 with performances by The Cate Brothers, Reba Russell Band, Kenny Neal Band, BSO Awards, Davy Knowles & Back Door Slam, and Ronnie Baker Brooks.

The festival is on the parking lot adjacent to Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World at Campbell Avenue and Sunshine Street.

Tickets are $20 for Sept. 11 and $30 for Sept. 12. Advance tickets for both days is $35 or $40 at the gate.

The Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau has earned accreditation from the Destination Marketing Accreditation Program. 

The only other destination marketing organization in Missouri that has earned accreditation is the Kansas City Convention & Visitors Association. Internationally, about 90 DMOs are accredited. 

DMAP is an international accreditation program developed by Destination Marketing Association International based in Washington, D.C. In earning DMAP accreditation, destination marketing organizations communicate to their constituents and potential visitors that their organization has attained a significant measure of excellence. 

The Convention & Visitors Bureau serves as the primary marketing organization responsible for implementing programs that increase travel and tourism in the Springfield metropolitan area. The bureau is a nonprofit organization. 

DMAP accreditation standards cover a variety of topics, including governance, finance, management, human resources, technology, visitor services, group services, sales, communications, membership, brand management, destination development, research/market intelligence, innovation and stakeholder relationships. DMAP is an independent international accreditation body and a leader in defining quality and performance issues in destination marketing.
