The Scottish Saint Andrew’s Society of Springfield will host the Kirkin’ of the Tartans on Sunday, October 28, 2012, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1551 E Portland St, Springfield at 10.30 am. The service will celebrate Reformation Sunday. The Kirkin’ Service is a traditional Scottish-American church parade (Kirk is the Scottish word for church) to honour Scottish heritage and the feast day of St. Andrew, Scotland’s patron saint, on November 30. The service will also recognize the Scottish roots of the Presbyterian Church. The Kirkin’ service began during the Second World War, when Rev. Peter Marshall of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church held services entitled “the Kirkin’ of the Tartan” to raise funds for British war relief. The service includes traditional Scottish prayers and hymns, kilts & tartan, bagpipes, and other aspects of Scottish culture. Scottish attire is encouraged, but not required. The event is free and open to the public – all are welcome, regardless of heritage – you do not have to be Scottish to attend!

Dr. Jones, Emeritus Professor of Organ at Baylor University, is well known for her warm personality, humor, and virtuosic playing, and has devoted her professional life to making friends for the organ, through Community Concerts, countless organ dedications, children’s concerts, and “Access to Music” programs. Recent recitals presented by Dr. Jones have occurred in such storied venues as The Riverside Church and Trinity Church Wall Street, both in New York City, the Mormon Tabernacle, The Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas, Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco, California, and the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France. In addition Dr. Jones has performed numerous concerts in smaller venues in 47 states and 12 foreign countries. Dr. Jones’ program will be a family-friendly concert engaging the audience of all ages in an exciting program of exuberant literature for the organ.

Priceless memories will be made at the inspiring Precious Moments Chapel on Friday, November 2, 2012, when more than 50,000 tiny lights will be turned on to illuminate the Chapel and grounds. The public is invited to kick off the holiday season and experience the lighting ceremony which begins at 6:30 pm. As always, there is no charge for admission. - - The Joplin Family Worship Center will provide musical inspiration during the ceremony, with a devotional given by Pastor Dan Wermuth of JFWC. Jeffrey Stamp, Ph.D. and Chairman of the Precious Moments Foundation, will close the lighting ceremony and perform a recital. Dr. Stamp leads the diverse life of an author, inventor, college professor, musician, and creativity guru. A highly sought speaker, he also performs in churches nationwide as a soloist. - - The inspirational art of Sam Butcher portrays familiar Bible stories in paintings, stained glass, richly carved wood, garden stoneware, and intricate bronze work and sculpture that fill the Chapel and the beautiful gardens that surround it. When lit, the smallest detail is illuminated to the “oohs” and “aahs” of attendees. Mr. Butcher’s 20 original Christmas hand painted wood decorations will be on display again this Chapel Holiday Lighting season and placed throughout the grounds. -
