The Kirkin’ Service is a traditional Scottish-American church parade (Kirk is the Scottish word for church) to honour Scottish heritage and the feast day of St. Andrew, Scotland’s patron saint, on November 30. The service will also recognize the Scottish roots of the Episcopal Church. The Kirkin’ service began during the Second World War, when Rev. Peter Marshall of the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church held services entitled “the Kirkin’ of the Tartan” to raise funds for British war relief. The service includes traditional Scottish prayers and hymns, kilts & tartan, bagpipes, and other aspects of Scottish culture. Scottish attire is encouraged, but not required. An offering will be collected for Joplin tornado relief, in keeping with the spirit of the original Kirkin’. After the service, there will be a reception in the parish hall with traditional Scottish food. The event is free and open to the public – all are welcome, regardless of heritage – you do not have to be Scottish to attend!

Get an overall understanding of the theory and practice of yoga from Body of Work Yoga Studio instructor Wendy Fanson in a friendly, supportive environment. Learn about yoga’s 5,000 year-old background, the benefits of practicing yoga and some of yoga’s fundamental poses. Once a pose is demonstrated, you’ll have the opportunity to try it yourself and receive feedback, alignment cues and modifications to tailor the pose to your unique needs. Tips to help you prepare: Try to arrive about 10 minutes before the workshop begins. Advise the instructor if you have any special needs or medical concerns, including pregnancy, that may affect your yoga practice. Wear comfortable, modest clothing that allows for easy movement. Yoga is practiced barefoot, and you will be asked to remove your socks and shoes at the start of the workshop. Avoid wearing lotions, perfumes, colognes or other fragrances. Yoga relies on deep breathing, and we want to breathe pure, unscented air. Try not to eat during the 2 hours before the workshop. If you already have a yoga mat, please bring it. -

By Thornton Wilder. Our Town is beautifully evocative, exploring the lives of people living in a small, quintessentially American town. The play focuses on three aspects of the human experience: Daily Life, Love and Marriage, Death and Eternity. Its universality, its simplicity and its immediacy have made it a classic. Our Town is a hauntingly beautiful play, powerful, warm and deeply human.
