Fall Vistas & Festivals

An incredible series of free participatory events including nature photography, backpacking, and camping courses; Lead Mine Conservation Area hike; Secret Spider Society; the first-person portrayal of York, the slave who accompanied Captains Lewis & Clark; and Conservation TEEN Club exploration of bluffs, caves, springs, and natural bridges are all available along with many others during September and October through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Springfield Conservation Nature Center.

If you have a Girl Scout in the family, she won’t want to miss Adventures in Girl Scouting on September 30 at Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium.

Do you find yourself impressed with large produce… REALLY large produce? Then be amazed at the annual Republic Pumpkin Daze where growers compete for local and international prize monies for their giant pumpkins, squash and watermelons. Entertainment, food, arts and crafts, and kids’ activities line Main Street during the display of agrarian feats.

See the town of Mt. Vernon multiply ten times over at Apple Butter Makin’ Days, which welcomes nearly 45,000 people for the three-day festival. There are a variety of foods, entertainment and more than 350 craftsmen from throughout the country along with plenty of freshly made apple butter, of course.

During the fall, few can resist the picturesque 35-mile drive from Springfield bound for the deep-cut hills of Branson, Missouri, and the Festival of American Music & Crafts at Silver Dollar City.
