In January 1863, Union forces defended the Springfield territory during the Confederate attempts to gain supplies and high-ground access. Twelve markers placed throughout the battleground commemorate where defenses were organized, troops gathered supplies, injured soldiers were hospitalized and homes were burned.

Built in 1891 as a jail, this federally recognized historical restoration returns the structure to use as a police substation with a police museum on the first floor. Tours are available by appointment most weekdays.
With about 6,000 volumes, the library at Wilson's Creek National Battlefield has one of the largest collections of bound volumes on the Civil War in the National Parks Service. Genealogical research, regimental histories and the Civil War Soldier's System are available.
Last Fall artist Matthew Mazzotta visited Springfield and conducted an outdoor "living room" conversation at Farmers Park to understand the interests and concerns of the community and to spark inspiration for a site-specific art installation to be located at Farmers Park. In April, Mazzotta returned to Springfield and will be on site at Farmers Park through the end of May to finalize his site-specific proposal.
