If you love to get outside and move, you are in the right place. Springfield is full of gems where you can enjoy rolling hills and clear rivers. You can hike all over the place, so start with these and see where they lead.

Bike Around a Lake

Dirt 66

Fellows Lake Mountain BikingGet on your mountain bike—or rent one—and ride all or part of the 25 miles of trails at Dirt 66. This path loops around Fellows Lake, and you can ride in either direction. If you’d rather take a stroll, hop off and enjoy the Nature Trail—no wheels allowed! These trails are unpaved, so if you don’t have a mountain bike be sure to swap road tires for hybrids. Fuel up on ice cream at the Marina Store or pack your own picnic to enjoy at one of the pavilions.

This Ozark Greenways trail spans 35 miles of hiking and biking trails and connects Springfield and Bolivar, hitting three towns along the way. Perfect for the active history buff, it traces the old railroad tracks once ridden by Missouri’s own Harry S. Truman. Feel like meandering? You’ve got tasty food options trailside in Willard at Mile 6. Refresh at the 7C Winery and Meadery at Mile 16—you can also camp there. At Mile 18 you’ll see the first of “The 16 Bridges of Polk County.” Along the way check out the ruins of Graydon Springs and take a break at Coates Branch Rest Stop.

Take a Hike and Get Your Feet Wet

Busiek State Forest and Wildlife Area

Busiek Hiking-Brad ZweerinkGet off the highway and hit the trail at Busiek, where you can pull off US-65 and head right into the woods. You can choose between the 10-mile East Trail and the 8-mile West Trail, with each containing three shorter routes (it’s all color-coded). Enjoy the bluffs above and the wildflowers below, and pack your water shoes—you’ll want to splash in the creek (and you may have to cross it). Pups are welcome, but keep them on a leash.

James River

The James River is a great spot for one of the most popular activities in the Ozarks—floating! If you need a lift to your drop-in spot, you can get one from James River Outfitters, which also rents water vessels, including inner tubes for a fun lazy day. If you have your own boat, you can still take the JRO shuttle. Don’t forget your fishing rod—the James has record-breaking gar, sunfish and paddlefish, plus bass just for fun. If you’re looking for a quick trip, Ozark Greenways has a 6-mile water trail with easy access at Lake Springfield and vessels to rent.

Howler Bike Park

Mountain bikers love the trails at Howler Bike Park, and you don’t have to be an expert to ride. Choose from trails for all skill levels, which are all clearly marked so you won’t wind up on a double black diamond unless you want to. Those who are new to riding can get more comfortable with a class at the School of Shred. If you need a bike and helmet, you can rent them here. You can also camp out or indulge in glamping on-site. Need to gear up with a coffee and refuel with a good meal? They’ve got a café and a grill, too.

Fulbright Spring Greenway

This trail for bikers, walkers and runners (and their pups!) is seven miles of heaven, edged with caves, forestland, prairies and consistent views of the South Fork Dry Sac River. Check out Ritter Springs Park and relax by the mellow springs. Then, head to the old silo and building remains when you explore Lost Hill Park. Pro tip: It’s top-notch for fall foliage. Don’t miss the beautiful loop around the lake at Valley Water Mill Park. You can also ride a horse at the equestrian center next door, where lessons are available, too.
