Gen. Fred Marty

The staff at the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau extend our condolences to the family and friends of Gen. Fred Marty, retired Deputy City Manager of Springfield, who passed away Wednesday.

Marty, 71, who was diagnosed with cancer in 2012, retired from the city in November after a career providing more than 50 years of public service.  A public memorial service is being planned.

A retired major general in the U.S. Army, Marty also had served as vice president of administration at Missouri State University, chancellor of the university’s West Plains campus and executive director of Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium.

A Celebration of the Life of Gen. Fred Marty will take place at 4 p.m. Nov. 22 at Mercy Hammons Heart Institute, 1235 E. Cherokee St. in Springfield. The event is open to the public, however, seating is limited.
