The Visual Arts
Your eyes are going to love Springfield thanks to a plethora of visual arts opportunities throughout the city. From outdoor murals to indoor pieces by acclaimed artists, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy during your stay in Springfield.
If you’re looking to get some fresh air, there are dozens of murals throughout the city on the outside walls of businesses. You’ll also want to explore the city’s “museum without walls” comprised of dozens of sculptures placed throughout the downtown area by Sculpture Walk Springfield. A new set of sculptures annually replaces those that aren’t permanently installed. You’ll find everything from whimsical to interactive pieces in this delightful collection.
At the Springfield Art Museum, changing exhibits are common alongside more than 10,000 pieces of work in the permanent collection. An annual display is Watercolor USA, a juried exhibit of some of the best watercolor art in the nation.
Sculptures and other visual art are found in city parks and other locations throughout the city. One of the most iconic is The World’s Largest Fork, a sculpture that stands 35 feet high and weighs 11 tons.
