Hey, Springfield,

There’s not much travel going on and not much of anything else happening. Sooner or later, that will change and we’re kicking it off with National Travel & Tourism Week May 3-9. We’re hosting tons of giveaways this week and showcasing the importance of tourism to Springfield’s economy and culture.

Over the next several days, we’ll explore the city’s leisure and hospitality industry with you by sharing information about how restaurants; conventions and amateur sports events; hotels; attractions; and the arts are important to the local economy. We’ll end the week with explaining your role in the scene.

A lot of what we know and love about Springfield has changed - at least temporarily - because of COVID-19 with businesses, attractions and individuals affected in ways we’ve never seen before. While we miss our favorite places, we also miss spending time with friends and family. As our favorite places begin opening again, here are some things you can do to get closer to loved ones.

  • Ancestry From Home: If you can’t visit family, our local libraries have seen a huge spike in usage of their Ancestry Library Edition program which offers a unique and free way to research billions of genealogical records at any of the 10 library branches and at https://thelibrary.org/genealogy. Access does require a library card and visitors can use a relative’s card. If you are new to researching your family, the library recommends you read through Basic Genealogy guidelines. Introductory videos also will introduce you to the site’s basic search function and tools.
  • Plan a Family Reunion: As city, county and state guidelines allow, summer is the perfect time to plan family reunions. Enjoy more than 600 area restaurants and dozens of family-friendly attractions and more than 100 parks and trails. Visit Springfieldmo.org or read our online Visitors Guide for planning inspiration.
  • Send a Postcard to a Loved One: The Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau is giving you the option to send a free postcard to a loved one for an opportunity to win one of five $100 Bass Pro Gift Cards. Click here to learn more.
  • Participate in the Spring Travel Auction: To help those affected by the terrible crisis, The Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau is introducing a new Spring Travel Auction. During May, people from around the Ozarks will be invited to bid on items provided by Springfield's tourism industry. The proceeds from this auction will benefit the Mother's Industry Support Fund — a partnership between Mother's Brewing Company and the Community Foundation of the Ozarks designed to help hospitality workers in Springfield. Purchase items such as tickets to attractions around Springfield, merchandise, hotel stays and more and share them with friends and family.
