It’s not a show, it’s an experience. We’re raising the curtain on Springfield’s premier outdoor performing arts theater. Tent Theatre tickets officially go on sale May 1, 2024.

A Good Place To See A Show

Named for one of Missouri State University’s most famous alumni, the John Goodman Ampitheatre in the Judith Enyeart Reynolds Arts Park opened in late 2022. Fun fact: John Goodman attended Missouri State University to play football in the early 1970s. He graduated in 1975 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts before heading to New York City.

John Goodman’s Favorite Place

For many Missouri State University performing arts students, Tent Theatre is a highlight and a cherished memory from their time on campus. “The nights in Springfield, in the summer doing Tent Theatre, for me, are unmatched anywhere else on earth,” says Goodman.

A Showstopping Investment

Ground broke on the amphitheater and arts park on April 8, 2021. The open-air facility cost $10 million and is the permanent home for Tent Theatre, as well as space for jazz festivals and comedy acts.

The Hottest Ticket in Town

Each season, tickets sell out. Opening night tickets sold out in less than 24 hours in 2023.

A Hit From The Beginning

In its first season, the tent was a hit, with overflowing audiences thanks to word of mouth and outstanding productions. Even in its debut year, the tent was too small, and an expansion was added in year two.

Come Blow Your Horn

The first show in Missouri State’s tent was Neil Simon’s Come Blow Your Horn. Each season, a basic show formula remains: two musicals and one play.

Free Parking

Parking for Tent Theatre is free; no campus permit required. Patrons may park in the east side of lot 24 at the recently renovated southwest corner of Grand Street and National Avenue.

Local Theatre, Local Fare

Intermission under the stars is a real treat. At each performance, patrons can indulge in local favorites. Pineapple Whip and Andy’s Frozen Custard by the cup are divine for a sweet scoop, or try Over the Top popcorn by Ozark Mountain Popcorn. The signature popcorn blend features classic butter, a hint of vanilla and orange and green sprinkles.
