Springfield has a slew of new ambassadors who can share information about the city’s travel and tourism industry with visitors thanks to a program launched in 2014 by the Convention & Visitors Bureau.

The program, Discover SGF, teaches frontline employees at hotels, attractions, restaurants and other businesses how to politely tell visitors about what there is to see and do in the city.

Discover SGF includes videos at www.DiscoverSGF.com along with tests that ensure the participant viewed the videos and absorbed the information.

Four videos have been produced, including an introductory video and videos focusing on things that are free to see, downtown and fun for kids. More videos are in the works. Once more videos are added, the program will be stepped up by providing the designation of Certified Hospitality Professional to those completing the tests along with free admission to several attractions and events so they can experience the city for themselves and share their experiences with visitors.

So far, 335 people have enrolled in the program since it launched during National Travel & Tourism Week last year. The CVB hopes this year’s National Travel & Tourism Week festivities May 2-10 will help increase that enrollment.

The Ramada Plaza Hotel & Convention Center has the highest number of Discover SGF participants in the city.

Missy Handyside, general manager at the hotel said she encourages employees to participate because the program can help drive repeat business to the city.

“Discover SGF is an awesome tool for our front line associates,” Handyside said. “It provides us with valuable information about Springfield’s attractions, culture and history that we can share with our guests in hopes that it will make their overall experience more enjoyable.   We hope to provide the guest with so many things to do that they will want to return to Springfield when planning their next trip. The Discover SGF program is one of, if not the best resources we have to promote what our city has to offer visitors.”

The CVB is a non-profit marketing organization dedicated to boosting the local economy through programs that grow travel and tourism in Springfield and the surrounding area.
