Museums & History

Whether your interests are in local history or events of the past that shaped our nation, historical sites and museums in the area will provide education and entertainment for hours. Some are well known while others are quirky and off the beaten path, and they all are worth exploring. Many are free or low cost, and some have limited hours so it’s a good idea to call before you go.

The History Museum on the Square is a great place to begin your exploration of local history. This museum, named a Best New Attraction by "USA Today" readers, offers a look at local history dating back to when Native Americans inhabited the area, through the Civil War and Wild West era that changed the nation and up to the birth of the iconic Route 66.

Other must-sees include Wilson's Creek National Battlefield where the second major battle of the Civil War took place, the free museums inside Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World and others that showcase the area's history.
