SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Visit Springfield is proud to join a nationwide celebration of National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW), May 3-9, recognizing the travel industry’s vital contributions to the U.S. economy.
Each year, Springfield welcomes an estimated 3 million visitors, generating more than $1 billion in economic impact and supporting nearly 20,000 jobs. Those visitors fill nearly 70 hotels across the city and support local restaurants, attractions, and small businesses.
That impact was on display during Springfield’s Route 66 Centennial Kickoff Weekend, April 30 - May 3, which brought thousands of visitors to the city and celebrated Springfield’s role as the birthplace of Route 66.
“Springfield’s visitor economy is powered by the people and businesses who welcome guests every day,” said Mark Hecquet, President and CEO of Visit Springfield. “From our hotels and restaurants to our attractions, retailers and frontline hospitality workers, our partners shape the experience visitors remember. National Travel and Tourism Week gives us an opportunity to recognize their impact and the role they play in keeping Springfield moving forward.”
Observed annually since 1983, National Travel and Tourism Week celebrates the role travel plays in strengthening communities, supporting jobs and connecting people. This year’s theme, “Postmarked: Essential,” highlights travel as a foundational part of local economies and community identity.
Visit Springfield will celebrate NTTW with a series of community events recognizing partners and welcoming residents and visitors:
Wednesday, May 6: Ribbon cutting and open house at Visit Springfield’s new downtown Route 66 Welcome Center from 4–6 p.m., featuring refreshments and food from local partners.
Thursday, May 7: Delivery of sweet treats to tourism partners across the city in recognition of their vital role in shaping Springfield’s welcoming experience for visitors.
Friday, May 8: Visitors to the downtown Route 66 Welcome Center will be greeted with donuts as part of Visit Springfield’s National Travel and Tourism Week celebration.
Visit Springfield also takes this opportunity to thank local partners, businesses and hospitality professionals whose daily efforts help create a welcoming and memorable experience for visitors.
