Queen's Gate 66

A Bold New Gateway to Springfield on Route 66

A new icon has arrived on America’s most legendary highway.

Queen’s Gate 66 stands as a striking symbol of welcome along historic Route 66 in Springfield, Missouri, inviting travelers from around the world to pause, explore, and experience the place where the Mother Road’s story began.

Rising nearly 30 feet into the sky, this illuminated, crown-like structure marks a powerful moment of arrival. Whether you are just beginning your Route 66 journey or continuing westward, Queen’s Gate 66 creates a sense of occasion and transforms a simple stop into something memorable.

A Landmark Designed for the Journey

Located along St. Louis Street next to the iconic Best Western Route 66 Rail Haven, Queen’s Gate 66 sits on one of Springfield’s most recognizable travel corridors. It is a place where history, design, and experience come together.

The installation was intentionally created to be interactive and accessible:

A Moment of Arrival

Queen’s Gate 66 is more than a visual landmark. It represents a new way of experiencing Springfield.

“This project is about creating a stronger sense of arrival in our city,” said Mark Hecquet, President and CEO of Visit Springfield. “It gives travelers another reason to stop, explore and experience all Springfield has to offer.”

That sense of arrival is intentional. For generations, Route 66 has been about the journey, but in Springfield it is also about the moment you realize you have reached somewhere special.

Queen’s Gate 66 reflects a collaborative effort to enhance Springfield’s role as a destination along Route 66.

The installation was designed by Kansas City-based Farris Wheel Studios in partnership with artist Amie Jacobsen, blending artistic expression with the spirit of the open road. Their vision brings together form, light, and symbolism to create a landmark that feels both modern and timeless.

The project was made possible through a combination of local and state investments, including $1 million in State of Missouri funding allocated to Visit Springfield. An additional 267,000 dollars, approved by Springfield City Council, supported nearby street and right-of-way improvements to ensure the site is safe, accessible, and welcoming for visitors.

Local partnership also played a key role. Gordon Elliott, owner of the nearby Best Western Route 66 Rail Haven, contributed additional parking to make it easier for travelers to stop, explore, and enjoy the monument.

Part of the Route 66 Centennial Celebration

Queen’s Gate 66 debuts as part of the National Route 66 Centennial Celebration, marking 100 years of the highway that helped define American travel.

As Springfield welcomes visitors from across the country and around the globe, the monument reflects an ongoing commitment to creating meaningful, memorable experiences along Route 66 and throughout the city. It is not just about passing through. It is about connecting with the places, people, and stories that make the journey unforgettable.
